Thirunelli Mahavishnu Temple is an ancient temple with a lot of features located in the lap of Brahmagiri hills in Wayanad. This temple, which combines natural beauty and spirituality, is known as "Dakshina Kashi" (Kashi of the South).

The following is some important information about Thirunelli Temple:

1. Mythology and History

A temple built by Brahma: It is believed that Brahma, the creator of the universe, installed Vishnu in this temple. Therefore, it is believed that Brahma comes here every morning to worship (a special place is still prepared for Brahma here for worship).

Behind the name: When Brahma arrived here, he happened to see the four-armed form of Lord Vishnu on a guava tree. Thus, the name "Tirunelli" is a combination of the words 'Tiru' (sacred) and 'Gujarat'.

2. Key Features

Pitru Tharpanam (Balitharpanam): This is the most visited holy place in Kerala to offer sacrifices to the departed ancestors. It is believed that if the sacrifice is made here, the souls will attain salvation.

Papanasini River: Papanasini is the holy river that flows near the temple. It is believed that if you take a dip in this river and stand up, all your sins will be washed away. Devotees believe that Papanasini is holier than the Ganges River.

Pindappara: Devotees offer Pindam to their ancestors on this rock on the banks of Papanasini.

3. Architectural Style

The temple is built in traditional Kerala architecture.

The temple is surrounded by large granite pillars. Its construction is not complete. It is said that it was built by a king known as Koomankolli.

Drinking water aqueduct: The ancient system of bringing water to the temple from the mountaintops kilometers away through aqueducts carved into granite can still be seen here.
